If you’re growing one of these incredible tropical plants, join in the challenge to see who can grow the largest leaf! Measurements will be taken on October 1, 2012, and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Manda’s Plant Farm. Jill noticed that her leaves are really taking off, and took a few quick measurements just to see how far they’ve come. You can see from the photo that they’re certainly living up to their name—currently measuring 34 inches wide by 35 inches long. Can you even imagine? If not, that’s just one more reason to pay Manda’s Plant Farm a visit. And, if you don’t have a Colocasia gigantea in your yard for this year’s contest, plan ahead for next year. Jill notes that the best time to plant is at the end of May or beginning of June, once the ground has had a chance to warm up a bit. As a tropical plant, the roots won’t appreciate being planted too soon! Of course, planting early isn’t necessarily the key to getting amazing leaves either—she didn’t get hers in the ground until the first of July, and it’s already a giant in its own right. And, if you’re still doing a little planting for this year, pick up some shrubs: they’re 25% off!
