Allergy Respiratory & Sleep Medicine in Canton, Ohio is heading into spring with new information, new ideas, new clinical studies, and of course, plenty of springtime allergy relief! The practice was missing the presence of Dr. John T. Given for several days at the beginning of the month as he was attending the 2012 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting. This year’s meeting ran from March 2nd through March 6th, and was held in sunny Orlando, Florida (not a bad place to visit if you’ve spent your winter in Canton, Ohio)!
A professional organization with more than 6,500 members from nearly 75 different countries, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology’s (AAAAI) mission is dedication to “the advancement of the knowledge and practice of allergy, asthma, and immunology for optimal patient care.”
The first AAAI Annual Meeting was held in 1944. It was a two day event with only four sessions: there are now hundreds of sessions spread over five days. At the 2012 AAAAI Annual Meeting, Dr. Given, along with more than 7,000 delegates from around the world, will have the opportunity to attend seminars, symposiums, workshops, and more. There will even be debates, special courses, and opportunities to explore emerging technologies. The staff at Canton’s Allergy Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is always eager for Dr. Given’s return from the annual meeting, and the new knowledge and ideas that he shares.
Here are a few of the fascinating topics that were discussed at the 2012 AAAAI Annual Meeting:
-Asthma medications may not be as effective for overweight children with asthma
-How common is newly acquired food allergy in children who received liver transplants
-Initiative seeks global accord on recognition and management of allergies, asthma, and immune deficiencies
-New medical journal to highlight clinical research and care
-One step closer to treatment for food allergy
-Patients with asthma don’t have more reactions during oral food challenges
-Pregnant women beware: smoke exposure may cause infant skin condition
-The hygiene hypothesis: what do the Amish have to with it?
-U.S. hospitalization rates for angioedema continue to rise, exceed rates for other acute allergic reactions
The new discoveries and information that Dr. Given brings back to Allergy Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is exciting not only for the staff, but also for the patients. As the new ideas are explored, new treatments can be tested and applied, leading to increased allergy relief and more symptom-free days for asthma sufferers.
March means more than just the AAAAI Annual Meeting. March also marks the time that allergy sufferers have to start gearing up for peak pollen season, and getting their allergy relief methods in order. Beginning in April, those who are allergic to any trees will be glued to the morning news each day for pollen counts as buds begin to appear on local trees.
As nature gears up for springtime, the research department at Allergy Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is gearing up for two upcoming studies in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
Visit Allergy Respiratory and Sleep Medicine this spring to take advantage of the best practices that Dr. Given brought back to Canton from the 2012 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting, new research studies, and springtime allergy relief!
