BTU Comfort Solutions, located in Parma, Ohio, has grown from a small home-based business to the full-service heating and cooling company serving communities in seven counties throughout Northeast Ohio—including parts of Cuyahoga County—that it is today. Despite its growth, it is still a locally owned, family operated business which treats its customers, both residential and commercial, like neighbors, not numbers. Whatever your needs, from sales to installation to maintenance, BTU Comfort Solutions is the local company to call.
BTU Comfort Solutions was officially formed in 2006 by Krista and Don Van Horn, who has been in the heating and cooling trade for nearly thirty years. Their goal was, and still is, to provide customers with the quality of service you can only receive from a locally owned and family operated business, and to offer that service at a fair cost for the product purchased and labor performed. They wanted their customers to feel as though a member of their own family had done the work, and not a stranger who would disappear the moment the bill was paid.
In the beginning, things were tense, and Krista and Don wondered if the business would ever move out of their basement or even take off at all. However, their patience and persistence paid off. After an initial small business loan, Don purchased his first truck and took out a few local ads to get the ball rolling. He made himself available 24 hours a day to ensure that no call went unanswered, and no customer went without service. It didn’t take long for them to develop a reputation as a reliable, reasonable company. Satisfied customers were happy to pass along the name BTU Comfort Solutions to their Cuyahoga County, Ohio friends and neighbors.
From there, it did not take long for word to spread that a new star was rising the heating and cooling industry. Within four years, BTU Comfort Solutions went from zero income to bringing in nearly $600,000 yearly. They had a banner year in 2011, moving into their new Parma, Ohio location and winning the Super Service Award from Angie’s List. Nevertheless, some things do not change. They may be up to four trucks now, but they still offer 24 hour service so that no call goes unanswered in Cuyahoga County or anywhere else is their thirty-five mile service radius. And Don is not resting on his laurels in some posh office. He is out with the rest of his team making house calls, checking up on current clients, and developing relationships with new ones.
Curious about the name? BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, or “the amount of energy needed to heat one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmosphere.” Huh? Unless you’re in physics, certain types of chemistry, or the heating and cooling industry, this probably isn’t common knowledge to you. So, when Don would be out on a call, he would get questions from homeowners and business owners about the BTU’s of the system that was being installed or serviced. They didn’t necessarily know what it meant, but they knew it had something to do with heating and cooling. The repeated question inspired Don to make it part of the business name. In case you’re still curious, one BTU is roughly equivalent to the amount of heat produced by a wooden match. Who knew this would be so educational?
Don and Krista are very pleased to be in a position to continue running BTU Comfort Solutions as the locally owned, family operated heating and cooling company they always intended it to be.
