The Cleveland property tax levy will benefit local schools throughout the area. Along with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, E.F. Boyd asks you to support your local community.
The Cleveland School Levy is being called, “one of the most important issues this November.” Not only because it asks you to support the education of Cleveland’s children, but also because it has been sixteen years since the last Cleveland School Levy has been passed. Over the past few years the school district has taken more than a few hits. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District, CMSD, have taken pay cuts over the past three years and over the past two years have cut more than $114 million from their budget. From 2011-2013, CMSD’s state funding has been cut by $55 million and federal funding has been cut by $84 million. The school district desperately needs the support of their communities and local businesses.
CMSD’s graduation is currently up and it rests at a rate of sixty-three percent. Eighty percent of decent jobs require a secondary education, which requires a high school graduation. A graduate from high school generally contributes an average of $26,000 to the economy. Graduating from high school not only improves the lives of those who graduate but it also stimulates the economy. Education is important. The years following high school can help shape and mold students into a better version of themselves. High school is such a brief moment in time in most people’s lives; it is not the time people should be stuck in. By voting for Issue 107, students will have an opportunity to grow and learn—allowing them their best possible chance to evolve. Approximately half of CMSD property taxes are paid by businesses, just like E.F. Boyd. The Cleveland property tax levy does ask for a raise in taxes. The cost of this fifteen million dollar levy is sixty-three cents on a $50,000 property. For sixty-three cents you can help demand that Cleveland schools obtain and keep only excellent teachers, expand the school year for those that need it, and open the door for extra curricular activities to help kids get involved.
