Sleep Solutions at Allergy Respiratory & Sleep Medicine in Canton

Dr. John T. Given at Allergy Respiratory & Sleep Medicine in Canton, Ohio has a very strong interest in sleep because of how many things affect it. Many diseases and medical issues can be associated with sleep issues. In 2010, Dr. Given became board certified in sleep, and is well-equipped to help you find your sleep solutions.

Why are sleep and sleep solutions so important? Sleep is the time of the day during which the body regenerates, recharges and heals. This is the only time that the body does these things. So, if you are not sleeping soundly, with quality and ease, the body cannot regenerate. Sleep medicine, as performed by Dr. Given, is necessary to address these issues.

The neuro-immune balance is upset when sleep is interrupted. Sleep can be interrupted due to stress, sleep apnea, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), chest or nasal congestion—all of these play a factor in productive sleep. If any one of these issues complicates your sleep pattern, then you are unable to operate during the day as you should because of your lack of quality, restful sleep. Sleep medicine explores all of these conditions and more.

How is sleep interrupted by the above issues? Sleep apnea is the closing of the throat during sleep. This occurs because of the relaxation process of the muscles in the neck area, which also causes snoring. Snoring is an early warning sign of sleep apnea. The brain awakens each time it senses the throat closing. Although the body may not wake, the awakening of the brain causes frequent interruptions in the depth and quality of sleep.

GERD is stomach acid coming back out of the stomach and entering the esophagus, which is not equipped to handle these strong stomach acids. Acid reflux is regularly a problem during nighttime because of the reclining position of the body. The sensations caused by acid reflux will again force the brain to be roused out of quality sleep, resulting in sleep deprivation.

Simple nasal congestion can also complicate restful sleep. The body wants to breathe normally, without obstruction, through the nose. If the nose is blocked, the body will compensate by breathing through the mouth. Mouth breathing is less comfortable to the body, and can cause dry throat, sore throat, and swelling of mucus membranes in the throat, thereby causing disruption of sleep.

These are just a few of the factors that can be sleep interrupters, all of which can be treated at Canton’s Allergy Respiratory & Sleep Medicine by Dr. Given. The treatment of these conditions can remedy your sleep interruptions, allowing you to get the healing and regenerative rest that you body needs each night.
